About Conflux 2011

We're excited to announce that Conflux will have a new format this year. In a day-long workshop on October 15th, a small group of invited participants will come together in Brooklyn for a series of informal conversations highlighting new projects and reflecting upon recent developments in psychogeographic practice. Participants include Lauren Cornell, Steve Duncan, Jason Eppink, Brian House, Institute for Infinitely Small Things, Tianna Kennedy, Ricardo Miranda Zuñiga, Lize Mogel, Eve Mosher, Sharilyn Neidhardt, Sal Randolph, Mark Shepard, Brooke Singer, Kevin Slavin, Jeff Stark, Marina Zurkow and more. In the evening we'll open up the workshop with a gathering for the Conflux community.

Why the new approach this year? Since Conflux launched in 2003, we've seen incredible changes not only in the technologies employed in many creative practices but also in the political, social and economic climates that influence our lives and work. Now is a good moment to take stock of these changes and re-visit what it means to experience the world as a psychogeographer.

At the same time, it's becoming clear—as creative conferences and festivals proliferate and many of us become overly-engaged with projects and commitments—that there's a desire to simply relax and connect with other practitioners minus the highly structured format that a festival demands. In considering this atmosphere, we wondered again (as we did eight years ago): what if we just invited some like-minded friends to get together and engage in psychogeography? With this question in mind, we made a tough decision to scale down the festival into a smaller, think-tank-type session—and we expect it will be very refreshing.

While the daytime event will be closed to the public, we anticipate much live tweeting and streaming (links will be posted here soon). If you'd like to join us in the evening, check out the Facebook event here.
